Our Work

Grameen Telecom, a pioneer in Bangladesh's telecom industry, has revolutionized rural mobile connectivity and socioeconomic development. Established in 1995 as a not-for-profit company with having a mandate primarily to improve the standard of living and reduce poverty through promoting and developing ICT-based activities in the rural areas of the country.

We are also a patron of the Nobin Udyakta program via GSSB which supports social business founders with needed investments and resources.

Village Phone

Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus took the Village Phone initiative, giving mobile phones to not only enhance communication in remote places but to empower rural women. Dubbed as the "Phone Ladies," these rural women became local business owners by using their phones to provide telecommunication services to their communities. In addition to providing rural residents with easier access to essential information and communication, the program helped the participating women advance economically and promoted a sustainable development model through social business. Village Phone has received praise from all around the world for it’s creative solution to closing the communication.

Our Story

In 1995, Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus founded Grameen Telecom. The mission was to Expedite the social and economic development of the rural poor by connecting them to the world. To Reduce all forms of violence and denial of legal and human rights to women by creating an atmosphere of wider communication, and information flow by giving personal phones in the hands of women. To Bring health and education services at the doorsteps of the poor through the new technology and lastly to assist rural people including the ones in remote villages to protect themselves during natural calamities and social disorders.

Professor Muhammad Yunus who has created Grameenphone the largest telecom company of the country with his personal initiative does not own a single share of Grameenphone and Grameen Telecom.
