Our Journey
Grameen Telecom, based in Bangladesh, revolutionized rural connectivity by providing mobile access through a unique model. It enabled rural women, dubbed 'phone ladies,' to offer telecom services via microcredit-funded mobile phones. This initiative not only improved communication in remote areas but also spurred economic growth and community development. Over time, Grameen Telecom adapted to new technologies, significantly impacting Bangladesh's socioeconomic landscape. It’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of integrating technology with social goals. From the inception of Grameen Phone to Establishing Grameen Telecom Trust; we have come a long way to ensure social change through social businesses. We aim to play a role in improving the quality of life and alleviating poverty. Our journey has taken us this far. And now we look forward to a Three Zero World.
1995
Company Formed and Registered as a Not-for-Profit Company, Limited by Guarantee, under section 28 of the Companies Act, 1994.
1997
Village Phone Program Launched on Independence Day of Bangladesh.
1998
CAPAM Bronze Award for Service to the Public 1998, GSM Association Award for “GSM Community Service” in 1998.
2004
Petersburg Prize for “Use of IT to improve Poor People’s lives” in 2004.
2005
Introduced GIK (Grameen Information Kiosk), “Grameen Telecom Scholarship Program” launched, First ITU World Information Society Award in 2005.
2006
Formed CIC (Community Information Center), Grameen Telecom Chairman won the Nobel Peace Prize.
2008
All Village Phone numbers converted from Post-Paid to Pre-Paid.
2010
Grameen Telecom Trust was formed which is the flagship entity responsible for implementing and facilitating Social Business ideas.
2012
Reached 1 Million Village Phone Subscribers.
2016
Scotland National Museum Showcasing Village Phone Initiatives.
